Hi! My name is Ryan. My nights around a table spent playing board games, dice, and card games, are the most enjoyable of my adult life. Board games make a great pastime, and i hope to enrich your experience of them by providing meticulously animated How to Play videos, along with some Find the Fun reviews, and unboxings of any new games i add to my collection. i hope this channel helps you to make good decisions about what to play, and how to get the most from your board game experience.

Such a good explanation. Thank you! Now I have to decide whether to get Terra Mystica or Gaia Project for solo. Both look fun.
i’ve never played Gaia Project, but based on all the comments i’ve received over the years, most players who have played both games seem to prefer it to Terra Mystica. Fans of these games also have great things to say about Age of Innovation.
@@NightsAroundaTable Thank you! I'll also check out Age of Innovation.
Excellent tutorial Ryan. I'm about to play my first game of this (3P) and I just want to clarify a rule. When you place your worker in an area that is filled and you have to bump opponent's workers, in the video you indicate those workers go back to the living area (where opponent will have access to them). Don't they actually go back to the working area (where opponent will not have access to them)?
You're correct! UA-cam doesn't have a graceful way for folks like me to edit our videos after the fact, so my best (worst) solution is to add a "card" on the screen and link people to the NAaT website where i keep track of flubs. But viewers who have those card overlays turned off (possibly you?) will miss them. Sigh. Anyway, fwiw, the error was captured on the video's addenda section a while back. i apologize that i don't have a better way to indicate this type of thing. nightsaroundatable.com/2022/05/20/how-to-play-on-mars/
@@NightsAroundaTable Ryan - sorry, I am late to the game and I did not realize you had corrected it. If it was not for you I don't think I ever would have learned this game (or Anachrony). I really appreciate your tutorials!
I’m all about this. Absolute BS how much doctors charge for simple procedures. Just an fyi dermatologist have always had me use plain petroleum jelly to speed up healing after mole removals. I always use it to heal up all wounds. If I keep the wound clean, use an extremely gentle cloth to remove dead tissue and keep petroleum jelly on it as much as possible it heals much faster. Also are you sure the “pus” wasn’t just cholesterol?
Very possibly. That’s what recent comments would have me believe. Thanks for the tip about the jelly… my wife often uses it on cuts too.
Hi cholesterol?
Oh, no - my name is Ryan.
This game sucks. Makes no sense and is probably broken
If you dial down your petulance a bit, is there something specific i can help you with?
@@NightsAroundaTable I keep trying this game with same faction and just lose immediately
@@NightsAroundaTable So no help with that, huh?
@@coltonbeatty6117 The game takes a couple of hours to play, so what do you mean by "immediately"? Which faction are you trying? And are you playing this with other people, or online? Against humans, or robots?
@@NightsAroundaTable I mean it's obvious pretty soon into the game that there isn't a viable way forward or any big push coming later that could at least put me in serious contention. I play against people as the Giants.
No doubt this could be a GREAT game but too complicated for me.
It’s not too bad! But what level of complexity are you comfortable with?
i had these though smaller when I was about 22 ish. I poked them with a needle and squeezed and the creamy stuff came out. they healed up and have never come back even though I have high cholesterol
Did you dress them in chocolate? They sound scrumptious!
Ive tried ordering it and its unavailable.
Where did you get that product. And what do you do in the shower

I recognized Bob Kehl art immediately.
i had never heard of him! What do you know him from?

This video was so useful, thank you! It's so well laid out. We've been playing Catan for decades, and I had to listen through your video once to be able to explain the expansion to the rest of the group and then we were able to fully understand and play the expansion! Would have been much harder if I had to digest the rules from the guidebook myself.
So happy to help! i hope you had fun.
I’ve used laser.. not working😂😂
use moar laser
It will be better to use those electric pen, tool, don’t remember the name, to remove tags. It is much faster results. I have one and uses in my face and body to remove skin tags, tattoos, warts, etc.
Great! Post a video. (Also, these are not skin tags.)
4:44 - I hate to be "that guy", but here is an instance where the herald didn't sing "hAversAaACk!!"
Yes. And consequently, the King’s dungeon has a new permanent resident.
@@NightsAroundaTable 😂 . . . I still very much appreciate your effort in this video. This is now my go-to when I need my friends to watch a tutorial for this 'behemoth' of a game.
@@tfpp1 Thanks! i plan to watch it myself, the next time i play :)
MAH GAWD!! I loved this video! Great job- you had me cracking up during Mass and Dying phases X-D
:)
Awesome video, thanks
Ah yes. The old AVGN inspired 'I dont like something, there its bad'. That the entire internet has become. Im glad this was the first video I saw from this channel, lets me know to stay away. Dice Tower is nice because it knows how to deliver criticism without sounding like a stereotype
this game looks like a dreadful hodgepodge of random mechanisms thrown together over the thinnest veneer of theme. crazy that its rated so highly on bgg
Don’t knock it til you’ve tried it! It’s just a deck builder with tokens instead of cards.
i have never backed a kickstarter and never will. I'll let others take the risk. If its truely any good it will come to retail. I tend to stick to modern classics that have stood the test of time. The more trumped up components to a game are, almost without fail, the worse the game is. Great games stand on their own with simple components. Look at Hansa Teutonica. Its components are literally just some wooden cubes and its my favorite game.
That’s one i’m due to make a video for!
How do they look today? I have them reoccurring and have them removed by an eye plastic surgeon. My outta pocket cost was $200. They came back within a year. Did your some back? Also that’s not pus. It’s the cholesterol coming out!
Take a look at my most recent videos and you’ll see. They came back, but weaker. i mentioned them to some co-workers a few weeks ago, who see me on camera every morning in video standups, and they had no idea what i was talking about. We were discussing them in person on a restaurant patio on a sunny day. i had to tilt my head back and point directly at them, and they said “oh… yeah?” So i’m thinking about treating them again, but i’m not as fussy about them as i was before this video. They’re a lot better.
Not gonna lie they look kinda cool !u must have an alien gene
Yes! From the Cholesteroleans.
Just discovered your channel, really like your style and we have very similar taste!
Thanks Dan! Where do our lists line up?
Can’t remember the order, but we love Wingspan, Caverna, Trickerion, Castles of Burgundy… we like cooperative games though 😉 Never played Sea of Legends though, but now it’s definitely on my list!
Glad you enjoyed the Imperium dividers! I've left a Google drive folder linked in that BBG thread for more updated dividers. The only real change (IIRC) is that I added an icon for the aggression level. Those vinyl stickers with acrylic backs will be so awesome!!
That was FANTASTIC. So helpful and so amusing. Thanks so much!
I’ve had this game on my short “to buy” list since you and/or your wife had it near the top of your top 10 list(s). Can’t find it anywhere though. I blame myself. Edit - ah see you included a MM link. Gracias.
Run, don’t walk! (Unless you have a peg leg.)
I think the biggest consideration here is just how much computing power has to be burned up to have chatGPT play the second player. There have been plenty of discussions in recent years about making board games more ecologically friendly to reduce the impact they'll have on the planet. I can't see this application garnering any good will from that angle.
Hmm. You might be confusing Large Language Model AI with crypto? Crypto requires large server farms to crunch numbers day and night in search of ever-higher primes. i think a lot of power goes into training a LLM, but i didn’t think a ton was used in actually running one. Am i wrong?
@@NightsAroundaTable From reading some articles, to my understanding it takes a lot of energy and resources to build the model, and the larger the model and more complex the operation the more power it uses. Simple chatbot functions use less than generating images, and small images cost less computing power than large ones, but since they haven't yet implemented the "process and interact with your environment" feature there aren't any studies or figures to compare that to yet. All told, AI is using the power of a small country just like crypto did and growing at a rate that will apparently break Moore's Law, but you're right that they are two totally different things.
@@RozanovaHunter Sure, BUT... different approaches to producing computation will outpace silcon in the years and decades to come. We'll be able to get more computation from fewer resources. And of course, the hope is that AI will grow smart enough to help us get there faster. It's kind of like... it's dirty and destructive to burn coal. But burning coal supplied us with the energy we needed to study alternative sources, so that we can eventually ween ourselves off it. But we'd never get there without easy, "dumb" ways to literally keep the lights on while we searched for more advanced methods.
This is a very underrated video!! It’s THE BEST video on Village. Amazing. Thank you so much.
Why thanks! i have the empty expansion boxes in a pile on my floor right now ready to throw out, trying to free up space on my shelves. But it’s hard!
OMG, you kill me! Was watching this as a refresher after putting this one down a long time, and not only is this the same amazing quality as everything else you produce, but your touch of humour is the icing on the cake. Your Russian transition/section announcements are hilarious!
Too kind! Glad i could help.
Your rules explanation videos are the best out there in my opinion. I frequently have to watch multiple channel’s explanations, but now I just default to yours and that’s all I need.
Thanks so much!

Maaan I just find this stuff so mind-bogglingly impressive, even with the AI brain farts. But holy heck, it’s a lot of money to pay considering the arbitrary “wish” allowance. I would love to see how it copes with Lisboa, and how you’d cope with trying to explain the game state every turn! 😇😅
Yeah! Forget the Turing test… let’s establish the On Mars test.
It's even more mind boggling when you remember it's still in infancy.
@@BobLee-df4zh Yeah... any of the shortcomings you see in this video will be eradicated, and (judging by its pace so far) right quick, too. Within the year, i'd guess.
Yes, lets do a german interview! But I'm sorry to tell you, I don't have a cat, so the cat won't eat eggs :-). It was a blast to watch your video, Ryan. Rules: When you take 0-3 ships, take 1 card. So usually I stop drawing after the first or second ship (if the first ship wouldn't give me a lot of gold). Of course wanting to buy crew members, changes things a little.
Ah! i remembered the rule incorrectly. And i’m not wrong in thinking that the robot had an insane first turn drawing 20 cards. i’m not quite ready for a German interview. But i am determined to be!
i didnt watch this video. but just saw the title. you playing with skynet bro. havent you guys seen the terminator? need to stop teaching it before its too late!!!
COME WITH ME IF YOU WANT TO PKAY ANACHRONY
So I'm of two minds vis-a-vis AI and board gaming. On one hand, I am very interested in how generative AI models might be able to attain general proficiency at board games as a whole. The computers have long stomped us at Chess and Go, and it would be quite something if that kind of capability could be extended to any board game. I don't really believe that's on the horizon anytime soon, but we'll have to wait and see. After all, if I'm with two friends and the game we want to play works best with four, it would be great to add a computer player on a whim. (Though perhaps not at Deep Blue level of play.) On the other hand, some people have tried to position AI as a cure for loneliness. I _wholly_ reject using AI in this manner. At best, I see it as a band-aid solution for healing only the most chronic of loneliness. At worst, I fear AI companions inspiring all sorts of antisocial behaviors in many people. Why learn complex social graces when your robot friends will abide even your worst impulses and actions? Anyway, I know this is all a bit heavy for a board gaming channel, so I'll stop here. But that's my general outlook on things as I currently see them.
Oh, no - please. Let’s absolutely go there. i also find it unsettling how gosh darned polite LLMs are. i have had numerous arguments with AI, mostly calling it out for its overconfidence in giving me answers that i know are factually wrong. When i began using 4o with a mind to doing this livestream and it misled me about setting up Anachrony, i was angry with it for just agreeing with me about the setup rule instead of… you know… checking the rulebook. But i got this unnerving Stepford Wives apology (made all the more unsettling since the voice was female). i really want to delve further into why those high-ranking staffers left OpenAI, but the cynic in me thinks it’s just to they could start their own firms and rake in a little of startup cash.
Amazing results for a model not specifically trained on those games. It wouldn't take much effort for someone to produce a model that is trained on each of those games, specifically. What is really needed to make it shine would be some service that keep track of the full game state so is is always available to the model. That would keep it from forgetting the special cards it had available.
Yeah - i was impressed with its grasp of the rules, but unimpressed with its ability to actually play. At the end of the King of Tokyo game, i was going to win if the bot didn’t do something to stop me. The robot still had cards she could have used, and i think she was keeping symbols that wouldn’t help her. Another crucial element is the camera access. A whole new world opens up if the human doesn’t have to explain absolutely everything about the board state to the robot.
Still plays faster than the in-laws

Wow, these started showing up on my eyelids a couple years ago in same spots. I've been researching what they could be with no luck and for some reason your video showed on my feed. No joke, I'm in tears with happiness there could be treatment. This has knocked my self confidence! I'm thrilled you made this video and something caused me to find it. ❤ Do you think the puss was the cholesterol deposits? Oh no, the only ones I can find are on ebay not in English. Yeah - from my understanding, it’s cholesterol, not pus. But i’m not in a hurry to drink a jar of either.
